What are your finances funding? Is it time you stopped supporting fossil fuels? Curious about what this “divestment” movement is all about?
Aside from the moral dilemma of investing in the fossil fuel industry, there is increased risk when you invest in companies whose valuations are declining due to the need for climate action. If we want to limit our temperature increase and keep fossil fuels in the ground, these organizations will have their assets stranded. Don’t want to lose your hard-earned wealth? It’s time to divest!
The Centre for International Governance and Innovation (CIGI) and Divest Waterloo Region are hosting a public lecture about the divestment movement and shift in time frame we have seen in recent years. No longer is divestment solely for the long-term. Clean tech and renewable energy industries are already out-performing so-called “dirty” businesses, and fossil-free funds can outperform conventional ones.
Jeff Rubin, the evening’s speaker, is a CIGI senior fellow, bestselling author, and former chief economist at CIBC World Markets. He will be discussing the research from his CIGI paper on divestment (read it here). A question period will follow. This is your chance to learn from one of the world’s thought leaders on the economics of energy sources!
This is a free event. Registration is required.
